Katie's second response
Chauncey, I love all your ideas on what this country needs for health care- you should have a position in government when you're older. I too, think some of the facts are horrible. 18,000 die because they don't have health care?! "oh sorry, you're poor. you have to die". I also am positive that all children should be given health care- I can't see how parents could think that they couldn't need it. In your paper, are you going to take a more expository approach, doing pros and cons, or are you going to argue your point of view? I think you should do your opinion because it would make more of an impact. Also, for field experience or impact I'm sure you could arrange to talk to someone who works at Miles and get first-hand how health-care works in Maine and what that person's views are on it. I'm looking forward to continuously checking in on your blog!
Response to: Children remain uninsured
I was very pleased when I found this article. It isn't about Universal Healthcare exactly but it shows that need for a good healthcare system. It is unfortunate that a parent would to proud to provide their kids with preventive care. Parents also think that when coverage runs out they will be faced with large bills but wouldn't you be faced with bigger bills if you didn't have insurance. I think that if the group that was providing the healthcare didn't advertise it as much as for poor children but just for children in general, then they would able to market it better.
I think it is really great that people are trying to get health insurance to children so they can grow up healthy.
A comment left on this article was that single mothers sometimes don't like to release the name of the father because of abuse and stuff. Maybe if the enrollment was easier and required less information, things would be better.

Chauncey, I think that given the wealth of this country, it is deplorable that the United States ranks 42nd in terms of average life span. If we had health insurance for all I would expect that we would rank much higher. I think it would be worth it for the country to have an extra tax if it meant everyone would be insured. How much money would be saved if the paperwork was streamlined and people had good preventive care?
Children remain uninsured
December 18, 2008
A group tried to get a total of 3000 children signed up for a free insurance program
They wanted to get the total from 400 to 300 but were unable to because of parents not wanting their children to be marked as poor.
The parents think that since their kids are already healthy, then they don't need insurance
The group had assumed that people would sign right up but that's not the case.
Many parents that can be considered on welfare don't seek medical care for anything, so they don't think that preventive care for their kids is very important.
Parents are also scared that they will get hit with big bills when the coverage runs out.

Hey Chauncey, nice blog. I like the fact that you know what you want to find, it makes it easier to offer advice. One thing that you might want to research or try to find is who the people are that don't have health care. What % of Americans, age, race, gender, location, and similar stuff that might help you prove points on why universal health care is needed. I think your topic is important and interesting.
Everett Second Response
Wow. Lots of good ideas and very nice responses to the articles that you have used. I had known that we were spending excessively, but not necessarily frivilously. 700 Billion dollars for making double copies is outrageous. I think that this blog is interesting to read, and I look forward to commenting on it again later.

Response to: Universal health care explained: Differences between system, coverage
I have found that a large amount of the articles I am finding are the same or follow the basic outline. This article was pretty "blah" when it came to information. It had some good quotes for me to use in a presentation. I really liked the short quote that explains Universal Coverage. It's a very short explanation but would be good for someone who doesn't really know anything about socialized medicine.
It brought up the point that Obama's plan will not affect the currently insured. Which is good in the fact that they will not be affected in a negative way but the level of their healthcare will not raise. I believe that Obama should take control of Health Insurance companies and give them a healthcare orientated agenda, not a profit-making agenda.
This article also brought up the point that it would not be fair for illegal immigrants to use the healthcare that is paid for by American citizens. Right now, hospitals have to give emergency care to anyone who requires it, despite citizenship.
With a effective Socialized Medicine, people would not have to choose between their house or the life of a loved one. That is a decision that should not have to be made.
The horrible healthcare in the United States is one of the reasons for the state that the economy downturn the US is in.
One con of a government run Universal Coverage system is that taxes will have to pay for, which means that taxes will have to be raised. That my sound bad, but you wouldn't have to pay for Healthcare anyways.
For my next blog, I hope to be able to get one that doesn't just explain Universal Healthcare but goes beyond that in a way that gives me more information

Universal health care explained: Differences between system, coverage
Canada, most European countries and Japan have a Universal Healthcare system that is effective.
"a universal health care system is a government-sponsored system in which every citizen of a country is ensured by health care." Rene McEldowney assistant professor in a political science department
Obamas plan will not affect the already insured
It is not fair for people to pay for illegal immigrants
People should not have to choose between their mortgage or food and their medicine
Pros of a universal coverage system
-people would not have to choose between their house or keeping a loved one alive
-a healthier population
-a better economy, one reason for the fallen economy is bad healthcare
Cons of universal coverage
-more taxes (but no healthcare bills)
If something isn't done, then the problem falls on the younger generation.

Rosponse to: Search for an Rx
This article was a very nice article. It explained Universal Healthcare and costs of it. The information about the cost healthcare today was very valuable to my I-Search. The cost of healthcare is enormous today. 2.1 trillion dollars is spent on it each year and 700 billion of that does not go towards improving people's health, but towards unnecessary things like double copy of papers that need to be sent to insurance companies. I believe this costs can be cut down a lot by cutting out the private insurers and adding a single-payer system that does not require such paperwork. Another great (actually quite depressing) fact was that 18,000 people die each year due to lack of health insurance. We as a country spend 7000$ a year for each person but we are stilled ranked in 42nd in life expectancy. That is horrible. If we spent so much, you think we would be able to have a life expectancy like... oh, what is it... a country with Socialized Medicine!
This article, which was written by a very prominent Med. School and hospital, said that if the economy was in good enough shape, we may see changes in the system in 2009, which would be very exciting, hopefully they are for the better. I really hope that what Obama says he wants to do actually comes to be. I read on a different source that candidates only accomplish about 1/2-3/4 of what they actually say they would do if elected.
Some states like Maryland decided to try and give their residents insurance because they think health insurance is better on the state level instead of the federal level. I disagree with this because I think that some states will have a good system but others will have a bad system and that everyone should have the same system. In this article, it was brought that the government should pay for a minimum coverage plan but if people want more, then they could buy it for themselves. That is a good idea but isn't what I would do. Germany's system is like that.
Some sceptics of universal coverage were also mentioned in this article. One said that there aren't enough doctors for Universal Healthcare. There would be a need for a number doctors, physicians and nurses if people were able to go to the hospital. Some other people say that they don't want to pay for the obese or for people who smoke. I say that you should feel good about helping someone else. In the UK, doctors are paid extra when the do better and that does work.
One way Universal Healthcare would save money is that people would be able to stop disease before it got to bad. We would be able to focus on preventive care instead of treatment. If we did that, we would only pay about 50$ for the medicine to prevent the disease, not the 50,000 it costs to treat the disease.
This article was written before Obama became the elect President, so they did not say anything about him. I wish to find an article like this in a few weeks that studies Obama's plan and does a report on it.

US spends 2.1 trillion a year on healthcare
700 billion of that does not go towards improving peoples health, it all goes to administrative costs for tests and treatments that aren't necessary
Half of all patients don't receive proper treatment
57% don't receive proper care
About 18,000 people die each year because they don't have insurance.
We spend about 7000$ a year a person for health insurance and healthcare, we still are ranked 42nd in life expectancy.
%80 of people say that healthcare system needs an overhaul, so people do think we need change.
People are hesitant towards a socialized medicine system because of power and money.
It is fight between social responsibilities and individual responsibility.
If the economy looks good, we may have a decent change in the healthcare system in '09.
Some people say that there are not enough doctors for everyone to have healthcare.
Some states realize that the federal government doesn't have the stomach for healthcare, so they do things by themselves.
Uninsured people cause the system 30 billion dollars every year.
A system that paid doctors extra who do more and better than the average doctor is a system that works well in the UK.
A lot of money goes into the cost of paperwork that has to be dealt with because of private insurers and the likes.
Some people are concerned with people who smoke or don't exercise because they will need to be paid for by people who do smoke.
A system of socialized medicine may be able to lower that because more non-smoking awareness will be published and brought up.

Response To: Campaign '08: Health-Coverage Plans Could Face Obstacles From Growing Budget Gap
This was very good for a beginning article. It gave the basics of each of the two major candidates for President. Since Obama has been announced the President, I wasn't very concerned with John McCain's view on this but I decided to take a look at him. His plan of giving a tax credit of 5,000$ families to pay for insurance does not sound like a good idea to me. To pay for this, he would tax people more. It seems to me that it may not work because you tax someone and then give them the money back. Don't quote me on that though because I may be wrong. Remember that I chose to not look into McCain's plan because he is not the future President.
Obama's plan to make mid-size+ business provide healthcare to their employees. My thoughts are that if it isn't an Universal Healthcare system, than it isn't enough. Obama's plan to make employers insurance is a good plan but it has it's drawbacks. An employer may still not be able to give insurance despite it's size. I believe it is smart to not force an employer that only owns a small business to give their employees insurance. That is unreasonable. I also like the idea that Obama's plan includes forcing insurance companies to accept anyone who applies for a plan. That is good but insurance companies are still privately owned business, so they can charge whatever they like. A pre-existing condition, age ,and other variables would drive the cost up immensely.
This article brought up the fact that Congress does not have a lot of money to spend on anything. A 1 trillion+ plan does not look good to pass and Obama's plan is estimated at over 1 trillion. I hope that they do not decide to cut corners or coverage with his plan to fit it through Congress.
This article was very good as a first article but it did not go as deep as I would like. It described nicely both McCain and Obama plans but I already knew them. The thing that it brought to my eyes is the fact that Congress may not pass Obama's plan. That would be a bummer.

Campaign '08: Health-Coverage Plans Could Face Obstacles From Growing Budget Gap
Both John McCain and Barack Obama have a plan to help the uninsured.
Obama wants to extend the employee-based health insurance and forcing insurance companies to sell a plan to anyone who applies.
McCain wants to give a tax credit of 5000 dollars to help with paying for health insurance.
The country has a very small budget for anything due to the state it is in.
Obama's estimation for his plan is 86 million dollars in it's first year and and 1.6 trillion over a decade.
McCain's estimated cost's are 185 billion for the first year and 1.3 billion for the next ten years.
The numbers that many analyst have come up with vary greatly but in all estimations, Obama helps more people.
Congress will find it very difficult to pass a 1 trillion+, ten year plan.

My Final Response To Topic
I got some great feedback and decided to do my I-Search on healthcare. Healthcare is so important to the country. I believe that we should have universal healthcare, so that people don't have to worry about getting sick. I think that I will focus on socialized medicince and what the US would have to do to reach a universal healthcare system. Many other country's have a system where you don't have to pay, in France, I think, they actually pay for your transportation home. Finland, Sweden, England and Germany are other countries with an universal healthcare system. I would like to do my research on other countries system and compare it to the US's and what the US needs to do to reach that system. I will also branch out to what the Presidential Candidates are doing to improve the system and what the winner does.
I have a very strong personal interesting the this topic. In America, if you get sick, you can lose your job, your house and be put in debt for the rest of your life. This happens to people all of the time is totally not fair. People are afraid to get sick or hurt. In a country that has universal healthcare, if you get sick and miss work, you are paid and you do not have to worry. What I described in the latter is the kind of place that I want to live in. I don't want to live where I can't to get sick. My parents lived in Australia, which has an universal healthcare system and they said it was great.
Healthcare is either 2nd or 3rd in polls of what is important to voters this election. Both candidates have ideas to fix the healthcare system. There is no guarantee that either candidate will address the issue while in office. When researching the topics before hand, I was getting 3 or 4 articles written the day before, so this topic is very suitable to ongoing research.
The availability this topic has is also very good. It is a very important topic and people write about it a lot. There are many articles about the failing healthcare system, but not a lot on socialized medicine. There are Opposing Viewpoints on healthcare, which is always good because I love Opposing Viewpoints.
This topic degree of challenge isn't the highest in the world but it will still have an edge to it. The availability of information will make it easy to find articles of information. Sifting through all of it will probably the hardest, and finding what I need and not just fluff.
I am very excited to write about healthcare and I am sure I will have lots of fun with it.

Health care is a topic that is relevant to most everyone, if you chose that you'd have no problem finding information. I'd be curious to find out more about other countries health care and how it compares to ours. You made some good points, I agree that health care should be free for every one. If you did your isearch on the banks, your information would be really current because the country is so focused on that right now. As for the Yankees, I think you'd be more successful with health care.

I think that healthcare topic is a really good idea. I understand that you wanted to just look up the insurance and how it should be free, but I was just a little confused on exactly what you'd like to follow. I agree with you that healthcare should be free and it would be cool to see how other people feel about it. You could talk to someone who works at the hospital, the insurance company, and just really anyone else as well. If you get a lot of articles about it then it probably is a good topic to search.

You are obviously interested in health care, and I think you care about that the most. I think you should cover health care, but I worry that the information you get will be the same thing over, and over again. but you can look at the lack of health insurance in lowere income families, and how they are paying for health car. As for the nationalization of banks that will probably be the most dynamic, especially if you look at how the banks that have been nationalized are working AND if you look at the other banks and how thy're faring. You probably won't find any information on the Yankees because right now national intrest is on other things. (maybe you can look at how proffesional sports are being affected by the economy.)

I-Search 3 Topics
For my 3 topics, I decided on 3 topics that I thought were interesting and important to the country. Those three were nationalizing the banks, what the presidential candidates plans are for the failing healthcare system and how the New York Yankees will rebuild their team during the off-season, the latter's importance being a matter of opinion.
The healthcare system has been a concern to me since I broke my arm twice. I asked my mom how much it cost and she said a lot but we have health insurance, so it’s okay. I really began to think about it after I saw “Sicko” by Michael Moore. The movie was about how the health insurance in the US was more about profit and less about giving proper healthcare. That made me really think about health insurance is an important necessity to life. I am a big fan of universal healthcare or socialized medicine, whatever you want to call it. I believe that healthcare should be free and I don’t understand why someone would say, no, free health insurance would be bad. Originally I thought about that I might do my I-Search on what the Presidential Candidates will do with the healthcare system we have now and what they would do with it once they gained the Oval Office. I have been thinking about changing it around, so I haven’t came up with a final topic. I was thinking trying to incorporate universal healthcare.
The nationalizing of the banks is what I refer to when I talk about when the government bought bank shares in order to help the banks that are not doing so well right now. This created a bit of turmoil, saying that it is total communism, it is destroying the capitalist freedom of America, and that the free-market would fix itself. I was interested in this too.
When thinking about a third topic, I decided it would be fun to follow what the Yankees would do to rebuild their team during the off-season.
Doing my research I discovered that healthcare had, by far, the most articles and news around it, in second came the banks and last but not least, the Yanks came in third. I am leaning towards doing my I-Search on some branch of healthcare but it is always changing.
